What is it?
NZTopoOnline is the Internet version of the New Zealand Topographic
Database (NZTopo) displaying seamless coverage of the 1:50,000 scale topographic
mapping of New Zealand published by LINZ for the New Zealand government.
Using NZTopoOnline you can make up your own map by choosing an
area of New Zealand and our offshore islands. Select the nearest road
or place name to your desired area using the query tool, or click and
drag your mouse over an area of the map, and zoom in to the scale you
choose. Then create your map. NZTopoOnline allows you to cut across
the map sheets you've been used to with paper maps.
Making NZTopo available through the Internet is consistent with the department's
e-LINZ strategy and parallels other initiatives within the organisation
to progressively adopt the internet as the principal method for the delivery
of information and services.
This service is designed to provide better access to topographic information
for the emergency services, government departments and other key stakeholders.
Users can view the most up-to-date topographic information that is held
in NZTopo round the clock, subject to periodic maintenance down time.
Use of the data
The topographic data displayed on this website has been cartographically
generalised, and is intended for published maps at a scale of 1:50,000.
You need to consider this when using at any other scale. You should consider
its application in relation to your requirements. For scale, generalisation
and accuracy specifications of the topographic data in NZTopoOnline,
consult the NZTopo Data Dictionary.
Tips on using NZTopoOnline
Click once and wait for the map view to download
When you open NZTopoOnline you open a map viewer in your browser.
Each time you make a selection using the zoom tool or search, your map
request is sent back to the LINZ web mapping server (WMS). The WMS then
sends the map back. Over a modem this can take a while. If you keep on
clicking before the map comes back you'll send more requests to the WMS.
This will slow the whole process down.
